Written by Caroline Sheppard, a
trauma & loss consultant, Brave Bart normalizes the many trauma reactions children
experience. Parents find it to be an excellent way to talk to and comfort their
traumatized child.
As a component of the What Color is Your Hurt program, it is
also very beneficial read on its own or used with the Brave Bart & Helping Hannah hand
puppets.
About the Author
Ms. Sheppard received a Masters Degree in Social Work from the
University of Michigan. For the past 20 years she has worked with traumatized children and
families in both clinical and school settings. In 1996, Ms. Sheppard was honored as School
Social Worker of the year. She completed Certification as a Trauma and Loss School
Specialist and Consultant from the Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children (TLC).
Traumatized Children desperately need and want to tell someone of the details of their trauma. Unfortunately, children rarely have the words to describe the terror of their experience. Knowing first hand how critical this is for healing, Ms. Sheppard wanted to provide a tool for parents, therapists, counselors, school social workers, teachers, medical and law enforcement personnel to use to help children tell their story. Brave Bart is the outcome of the author's experience and dedication to children struggling to cope with trauma and loss.
About the Illustrator
Brave Bart is the result of a family effort. John Manikoff,
the illustrator, is the author's brother. He is a talented musician who has written and
performed his own music for many years. Knowing that he is also a talented artist, Ms.
Sheppard asked him to illustrate Brave Bart. In this first book, he captures the heart,
the soul and behavior of traumatized children ... a very special talent.
